In a significant technological advancement, the inaugural launch of an autonomous underwater vehicle (AUV) took place here on Friday. This state-of-the-art AUV, christened ‘Neerakshi,’ stands as a pioneering creation in the country, engineered specifically to detect mines. The development of this cutting-edge AUV is the result of a fruitful collaboration between Garden Reach Shipbuilders and Engineers (GRSE) Ltd, a prominent warship manufacturer based in Kolkata, and the esteemed MSME entity AEPL.
GRSE Chairman and Managing Director, Commodore (Retd) P R Hari, shared during the launch event that following the successful user trials conducted by the Indian Navy, Coast Guard, and potentially the Army as well, the AUV is expected to be commercially available within the next six months to a year. This futuristic device promises to revolutionize mine-detection capabilities, ensuring enhanced security and safety in underwater operations.
As this groundbreaking AUV embarks on its journey, it is not only a testament to India’s technological prowess but also marks a crucial step towards bolstering the nation’s defense capabilities. The introduction of ‘Neerakshi’ opens up new possibilities for underwater exploration and safeguards against potential threats lurking beneath the ocean’s surface. With the Indian defense forces actively participating in the user trials, the nation is eagerly anticipating the official deployment of this remarkable AUV to fortify its maritime security and protect its strategic interests.
